We have lift off! National Science Week 2021 was officially launched this morning by the Hon Christian Porter MP, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, during a virtual launch event hosted by Science & Technology Australia and Questacon. 

After an inspiring welcome to country from Ngunnawal-Ngambri custodian Paul House and introduction from Questacon Director Professor Graham Durant, viewers were then given a sneak preview of some of the exciting events that will be taking place throughout the week, which even included a special guest appearance from ‘Space Gandalf’! (a.k.a. Greg Quicke from Astro Tours in Broome).

Directly following the launch, guests could stay online for a special panel event, where a collection of experts from across the nation participated in a forum which examined ‘The Science of Recovery, Resilience and Renewal’.

The panellists discussed how deep science expertise in Australia has been critical in the nation’s response to various challenges including bushfires, a changing climate and of course, an ongoing global pandemic.

A consistent theme throughout the discussion was how well placed Australia has been to meet these challenges, thanks to the capabilities, expertise and preparation which had already been instilled in Australia’s scientific institutions over many years.

Other significant issues which were discussed included the importance of Indigenous involvement in scientific endeavours, the amazing work created by Australian innovators and the results from the recent ‘State of Science Index’ global survey by 3M, which explores public attitudes towards science.
