Grants

While some of the details vary from year-to-year there are usually a range of grants available to help organisations and schools to hold science engagement activities in National Science Week.

National grant round

The Australian Government supports National Science Week in a variety of ways, including through event grants.

These grants help provide nationwide science engagement activities for the community. They support projects that:

• are high profile – across all states and territories
• stimulate further contributions by other organisations
• target new and under-served audiences
• engage Indigenous Australians in National Science Week activities

An open competitive funding round of $500 000 is held once a year. The minimum grant amount is $2000 and the maximum grant amount is $20 000.

Projects must be worth more than the grant amount you are applying for. You must have some additional funding or in-kind contributions to support your project.

Applications are usually open around October and the grants announced in the new year. More information.

State and territory seed grants

Most of the Science Week coordinating committees in the states and territories hold an annual seed grant round to assist event holders to hold local events. These local grant round are usually open in the period from February to April. Occasionally there are grant opportunities for larger amounts to stage a state launch function or other more significant event.

State grant round opportunities are published in our news feed and via our social media accounts and e-newsletter. The amounts available, grant criteria and application processes vary between jurisdictions.

School grants

The Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) conducts an annual grant round to assist schools to hold a special event in National Science Week. Applications are usually open in Term One and the results of the selection process announced in Term Two. Schools can apply for up to $500 of assistance.
