St Joseph's Citizen Scientists – Spread our wings

Caterpillars and butterflies are critical to a healthy environment in supporting the food chain, controlling pests, and assisting in pollinating plants and are an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.  Through our partnership with Paten Park Native Nursery and Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count, we will research and purchase the best butterfly-attracting species of plants and soil types for our local area and butterfly species. Together we will build a sustainable butterfly habitat and identify the butterflies that will visit our garden in spring.  We will partner with our local catchment group to support Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count and conduct our own butterfly count.

Our 480 students from P-6 will be able to identify caterpillar, moth and butterfly species, keep a record of numbers, organise the data, and report to our local catchment group.

During National Science Week, we will become etymologists as we celebrate and learn about our pollinator friends with museum displays, crafts and art.  We will construct butterfly feeders and native seed balls for our homes, study the symmetry of butterfly wings and view the world through compound eyes.  Our home project will be to create a piece of garden art made entirely from recycled and natural materials which will grace our school gardens for the week.  We will learn more about our native bee hives and our St Joseph's parents who work in science will be our special guests as we learn about different areas of science.
