The main objective of the Altona Skipper Butterfly Stepping Stone Survival Project (ASBSSSP) is to create a sustainable habitat for this butterfly in the Altona College grounds which lies between the two main habitats of this butterfly, Cherry Lake in Altona, and Truganina Swamp. We aim to highlight the vulnerability of this species and advocate for its protection. Through a combination of Indigenous and community involvement, educational outreach, the Hobson’s Bay Council Conservation Rangers, Melbourne Water, Deakin University, and in–kind help from the Altona College gardener, as well as students, and teachers, we are looking forward to addressing the key ecological challenges that face the Altona Skipper Butterfly (ASB).
The presence of the ASB in the area is a bioindicator of the overall health of Cherry Lake and Truganina Swamp. There has been a decrease in the number of the ASB in recent years, rendering it an endangered species due to urbanisation, pollution, and the removal of its habitat. Hence, additional habitats are needed near the known and vulnerable habitats.
By creating an urban environment with diverse Indigenous flora and fauna, we will help the ASB be more resilient and better adapt to environmental changes.
The planing will take place at the back of E-Block, near the Mathematics office
