Bringing its own unique mix of science and art to The Quad for a one day festival on 18 August 2018 to celebrate National Science Week, the Arts Vs Science Festival is Lismore’s own petri dish of creative exploration – and its paint palette of scientific discovery has just dropped. Find out what happens when you put art and science in a test tube and shake it!
Now in its third year thanks to the support of Inspiring Australia, the Arts Vs Science Festival brings together artists and scientists (and everyone in between) from some of the region’s leading education, research and action institutions. “This event is a fantastic way to showcase experimental and cross-disciplinary platforms in an open-air environment which is what our program is all about,” said Quadrangle Placemaking officer Marisa Snow.
“All the Quadrangle stakeholders are working with the Northern Rivers Science Hub to contribute to the program in various ways; from plant-dyeing workshops in the Gallery, to science labs run by the Library, and a fascinating exploration of the science of sound from the Conservatorium.”
Immersing the Lismore Quadrangle in a day of science, art and music, the festival will be opened by the Nini Nahri Gali Bundjalung Dancers.
Magnify your curiosity with ‘Science on the Green’ featuring hands on fun interactive science experiments for the whole family.
Use microscopes that attach to your mobile phones. See the moon rise at 11am with solar astronomy. Explore the before and after of waste with science in the bin. Design your own calico bags and say no to plastic. Use flower presses to preserve plants and using dried plant pieces to create art works in frames. Go in the draw to with a water tank and learn about our water catchment. Get coding and join in Super Science in the ‘Library Science Lab’; while the ‘Con Studio Underground’ presents the “Sounds vs Science” and explore how art helps us communicate with “Beyond Words – how pictures make our brains smarter”.
The ‘Gallery Bright Ideas Forum’ spans the arts/science spectrum. Be inspired by Australian satellite imagery timelapses. Have you ever wondered about eating insects or how to identify frogs from their calls? Shark researcher Andrew Colefax will be bringing in the drones. Be mesmerised by the wonderful time-lapse fungi photography of Steve Axford. Hear about plant textiles in conversation with Susan Fell Mclean whose exhibition “Gondwana Colour : Eucalyptus Colour” will be featuring in the Lismore Regional Gallery.
Powered by the Southern Cross solar Sunflower, ‘Music on the Green’ features Quad favourites Jex Lopez and the Gravediggers and Lady Mondegreen, featuring Lismore’s own Kate Stroud, Barry Hill and friends as well as rising Southern Cross University music stars Love Your Mother, and Clancy Menzies.
